POEMS syndrome — Definition

POEMS syndrome is a rare multisystemic disease characterized by polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrineopathy, monochlonal gamopathy and skin changes. This syndrome occurs as a result of abnormal proliferation of plasma cells, and often manifests itself with skin findings such as progressive neurological symptoms, liver or dilute growth, hormonal imbalances and hyperpigmentation. It is put with diagnosis, clinical findings and laboratory tests (monoclonal protein presence), treatment can be applied to chemotherapy or stem cell transplant for underlying plasma cell disorder.
