Genellikle influenza A, influenza B, herpes simpleks virüs, insan herpes virüs 6, enterovirüs gibi viral enfeksiyonlar tetikler. Genetik yatkınlık (RANBP2 gen mutasyonu) da rol oynar.

Ani başlayan ateş, bilinç değişikliği, konvülsiyonlar, nörolojik defisitler, koma. Sıklıkla solunum yetmezliği ve multiorgan disfonksiyonu eşlik eder.
